LARAMIE -- Cowboy sophomore golfer Patrick Azevedo continued his strong play this fall season on Friday as he is tied for sixth place after the first day of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate being played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.

Azevedo posted rounds of 72 (Even) and 67 (-5) for a 36-hole total of 139 (-5) on Friday.  He is only three shots out of the tournament lead, which is currently held by Caden Fioroni of UNLV, who fired a 136 (-8) on the opening day of the tournament.  Azevedo is coming off an outstanding performance earlier this week when he tied for second at the Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., with a three-round total of 205 (-5).

He also placed third in the individual portion of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational earlier this fall where he posted a 209 (-7). In the eight rounds Azevedo has played this fall, he has shot under par in six of those rounds and shot par the other two rounds.

The Cowboys concluded Friday with a two-round team total of 582 (+6) and will enter Saturday’s final round one shot back of BYU and Denver, who are tied for fifth at 581 (+5). San Diego State leads the team competition with a 36-hole total of 559 (-17).

All five of Wyoming’s team members contributed to the Pokes’ strong start on Friday.  Sophomore Jaren Calkins fired a 146 (+2) and is tied for 33rd. Senior Tyler Severin is only one shot behind Calkins at 147 (+3) and is tied for 42nd. Sophomores Kristof Panke and Cade McLaughlin are tied with each other in 69th place at 151 (+7). There are 104 players competing in this week’s Tucker Intercollegiate.

Saturday’s final round will get underway with a shotgun start that is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m., Mountain Time. The William H. Tucker Intercollegiate is being played on the UNM Championship Course, which measures 7,546 yards and plays to a par of 72.
