Bohl on QB situation: ‘I think you could see both of them play’

LARAMIE -- Craig Bohl is not about to tip his hand on who the starting quarterback will be when the Cowboys host Weber State Sept. 5.

Has he thought about it? You bet.

Wednesday afternoon after announcing the five newest members of the 2020 signing class, Wyoming's head coach was asked about the anticipated outcome between freshman Levi Williams and sophomore Sean Chambers.

"We're going to play the guy that puts us in the best position," Bohl told the media.

Williams will get the bulk of the work this spring as Chambers continues to recover from a season-ending knee injury. Last season's opening day starter could see some action, according to Bohl, but it will be limited and no contact.

"We are not trying to rush him along," Bohl said of Chambers.

When asked about the possibility of playing two quarterbacks, Bohl said that is something he has discussed with offensive coordinator Brent Vigen. He added that he won't be pulling a "Steve Spurrier" and interchanging quarterbacks every other play, but could see a scenario where both do see the field.

"The skill set both have, we think both add to our Offense," Bohl said.

Bohl also noted it makes a major difference when both quarterbacks are preparing throughout the week knowing they will be under center in some capacity.

"Going in, he sharpens his sword," Bohl said.

Bohl also said he is comfortable with both because of their ability to run, though he admitted he wants to see much less of that in 2020. Chambers rushed for 567 yards on just 90 carried before suffering an injury in a home win over New Mexico Oct. 19. Chambers also played the first half the following week against Nevada.

Williams carried the ball 40 times for 181 yards in just three games.

"We are in a really good position," Bohl said. "Both are mobile and give us a lot more flexibility on the play sheet ... Their dual threat warrants both get a really hard look."
