Gonzalez Leads UW on First Day of Cowgirl Classic

MARICOPA, Ariz., – The University of Wyoming women’s golf team opened action at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes hosting the annual Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Wednesday.

Jadan Gonzalez led the way for Wyoming, as she sits in a tie for 10th place. UW is in 15th place in the team standings at 606 (+13) with rounds of 301 (+13) and 307 (+17).

It was a long day with great weather and a good set up on a tough golf course,” head coach Josey Stender said. “We got off to a great start. We were very confident. We were putting well, sticking to our game plan and put ourselves in a good position after Round 1. Round 2, I think we had some very costly errant shots that were tough to recover from on this type of golf course.”

Gonzalez shot a 71 (-1) in the opening round of the event. She followed that up with a second round of 72 score of even-par and is at 143 (-1) after two rounds for a tie for 10th place.

“Overall, Jadan should be very proud of the position she’s put herself in,” Stender said.

Tomine Bjerkelo is in a tie for 74th at 155 (+11). She recorded rounds of 80 (+8) and 75 (+3). Kyla Wilde and Morgan Ryan are tied for 80th at 156 (+12). Wilde had rounds of 75 (+3) and 81 (+9) with Ryan adding rounds of 79 (+7) and 77 (+5). Samantha Spielman is at 160 (+16) after the first two-rounds of play.

Grace Dunkleberger and Sophie Spiva are playing as individuals. Dunkleberger had rounds of 75 (+3) and 78 (+6) sitting in tie at 62nd place at nine-over. Sophie Spiva is in tied for 81st place with rounds of 75 (+3) and 80 (+8).

Sacramento State leads the field by nine strokes at seven-under par. Long Beach State is in second followed by New Mexico. Emma Bunch of New Mexico State and Leia Chung of Boise State lead the field at eight-under par.

The Wyoming Cowgirl Classic wraps up action tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. local time.
