SAN DIEGO -- The Wyoming volleyball team, powered by a great offensive performance, swept San Diego State on the road Thursday night, defeating the Aztecs 25-22, 25-23 and 26-24.

The Cowgirls (16-8, 11-2 MW) hit .322 as a team while holding the Aztecs (12-12, 5-8 MW) to a .211 clip to win their ninth match in their last 10. Jackie McBride led UW with a match-high 14 kills and hit .476 in the win. KC McMahon and Tara Traphagan each added 12 kills apiece and hit .308 and .571, respectively. While Halie McArdle added eight on the night.

Mackenzie Coates orchestrated the offensive beautifully on the night, averaging over 15 assists per set as she registered 46 assists for the match. Coates, along with McBride, also had the two service aces for the Cowgirls in the sweep.

Defensively, McBride led the way at the net with six block assists, while Coates, McArdle and McMahon all had two each. In the back row, Madi Fields was stellar as well as she tallied 16 digs while McArdle added eight.

Both teams had seven blocks and two aces each while Wyoming had nine service aces to SDSU’s three.

Wyoming controlled much of the first two sets, just trailing early on in the first at 3-2 before a long run put the Cowgirls out front 13-8. UW would lead the rest of the set to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Aztecs jumped out to a 11-8 lead but after a timeout by the Cowgirls, UW went on a 7-2 run to gain a 15-13 lead and wouldn’t relinquish the advantage the rest of the set.

In set three, the Cowgirls showed their mettle as SDSU came out firing, taking a 12-7 lead. However, another Wyoming timeout spurred on a rally as the Cowgirls would eventually tie the third at 15-15. From there, UW eventually gained control at 17-16 and would stay in front the rest of the way.

UW will now shift its sites further north in the state of California as the Cowgirls travel to face Fresno State at noon Saturday. -- University of Wyoming press release
