Tyler Hughes Lands on Wuerffel Trophy Watch List
LARAMIE -- Tyler Hughes is one of 113 nominees on the 2026 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, recognizing college football players from across the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) who exemplify community service, academic excellence and athletic achievement.
Wyoming's senior quarterback, along with the entire football program, partnered with "Get in the Game" to encourage people to sign up and register as potential donors in the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) in April in the Wyoming Union.
In the span of a few hours, 113 people volunteered for cheek swabs to have their DNA added to the NMDP registry. Hughes has also been involved in other outreach events, such as work with the local Boys and Girls Club, since his arrival in Laramie last January. He also hosted a QB camp in Casper with fellow UW signal caller Mason Drube.
"He's special and he's dynamic," Wyoming wide receivers coach Jovon Bouknight said Wednesday, referring to Hughes. "When I say this -- and I've been around a couple special quarterbacks (Oregon's Justin Herbert and Utah State's Jordan Love) in my in my past -- his leadership ability and what he does off the field, I think helps define who he is as a person and as a player.
"... It's like you have another coach already implemented in your staff. So that part, man, I mean, it speaks volumes."
Widely regarded as college football's premier award for community service, the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy celebrates student-athletes who use their platforms to serve others and create positive change. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner and University of Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who turned his football success into a lifelong mission of service, the award reflects his legacy of leadership and humanitarianism.
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the trophy's founding.
"It’s an honor to recognize these student-athletes for the difference they are making in the lives of others," Wuerffel said. "Their commitment to service demonstrates the powerful impact college athletes can have both on and off the field."
Wyoming student-athletes recorded 2,600-plus hours of community service this past season.
Hughes, a graduate transfer from William and Mary, threw for 2,330 yards and 20 touchdowns last fall. He also added 670 more yards and 11 scores on the ground. The Georgia native is the first player in school history to throw for more than 2,000 yards and rush for another 650.

The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, a member of the National College Football Awards Association, is college football's premier award for community service. The trophy is presented annually by the Wuerffel Foundation to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on and off the field.
