UW Golfers Battle Elements in Opening Round of MW Championships

CRESWELL, Ore., –The Wyoming Cowboy golfers battled rainy conditions in the opening round of the Mountain West Championships on Friday at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore.
UW shot a 290 (+2) during the first 18-holes of the 72-hole event to sit in eighth place. Wyoming is only four spots out of the top-five in a closely contested championship.
“We played solid and had a really great effort in tough conditions,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “This tournament is going to be a grind, but I feel good with where we are at after the first day. We finished strong coming into the clubhouse carding some birdies and we will look to build on that momentum tomorrow.”
The Pokes were led by Jaren Calkins on Friday with a 70 (-2). He recorded two birdies during the final six holes, as he is sitting tied for seventh place. Jimmy Dales added a 72 (E) par for the opening round and is tied for 18th place.
Kristof Panke is tied for 26th after an opening round of 73 (+1). Patrick Azevedo added a 75 (+3) and is tied for 40th. Davis Seybert carded a 78 (+6) and is in tied for 51st place.
San Diego State leads the team race at 282 (-6). Colorado State is in second at 284 (-4) followed by Fresno State and Nevada at 285 (-3). Yuki Moriyama of UNLV and Shea Lague of San Diego State are tied for the individual lead at 67 (-5).
The teams return to action tomorrow morning with conditions set to improve for the second round of play.
