UW’s Cynor, Palmer Set to Compete at U.S. Olympic Team Trials

LARAMIE -- The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team is sending a pair of student-athletes to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Quinn Cynor and Carly Palmer will compete in a meet held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, beginning Saturday.

The pair of Wyoming swimmers accomplished their impressive feat in very different ways.

Cynor has known for nearly a year that he’d be going to the Trials, as he qualified well before the 2023-24 season even began. Carly Palmer logged her Olympic Trial cut at the last possible moment just a couple weekends ago.

This weekend may be the conclusion of Palmer’s decorated swimming career. She applied for a waiver from the NCAA to compete one more season and has yet to hear back about that decision. If she loses that appeal and this is indeed it, she couldn’t imagine a better way to go out.

“I’m super excited to get to race with the best swimmers in the country and very happy to have this opportunity to compete,” Palmer said. “It would be great to PR at Trials, but more than anything I just want to walk away from this meet feeling proud of the work I have done to get to this point and content with my swimming career. I’m excited to compete with the best athletes in the U.S. and represent UW.”

Cynor still has one season of eligibility remaining. The Olympic Trials represent another highlight in what has been an illustrious career in the pool. It’s a career that has featured three school records and a pair of individual Western Athletic Conference titles.

“Just qualifying is an exhausting process,” Cynor said. “It’s a literal lifetime of effort and preparation with an absolute ton of support from family, coaches, teammates, friends and fellow competitors. As far as expectations, all swimmers at this level dive into the pool with one true goal – a personal-best swim that is hopefully good enough to move on to semifinals and beyond.”

Both Cynor and Palmer are slated to compete Sunday during the 9-11 a.m. window, and that can be seen live on Peacock.

Cynor will go in the preliminary races of the 200-meter freestyle, while Palmer takes aim at the 100-meter breaststroke preliminary races. Semifinals of each of those races take place Sunday night during the 6-8 p.m. time window and are broadcast on NBC.
