Wyoming Cornerbacks Coach Benny Boyd Hired at TCU
LARAMIE -- Wyoming is in the market for a new cornerbacks coach.
Benny Boyd has accepted a coaching position at TCU after spending the previous six seasons in Laramie. The Illinois native also served as a co-special teams coordinator on Jay Sawvel's staff.

"Sad to go," Boyd told 7220sports.com on Monday. "Very tough decision because of the people at Wyoming. But, ultimately, it was an opportunity I could not pass up.
"... I will always bleed brown and gold."
A fiery and vocal leader, Boyd tasked his young defensive back room with changing the narrative in 2025. "They're blaming you," he shouted during the first practice of the fall, referring to the "weak link" of an otherwise stellar unit.
The message was received loud and clear.
The Cowboys, led by starters Tyrese Boss and Dainsus Miller, limited opposing quarterbacks to an average of just 175.5 passing yards per game and just 15 touchdowns through the air. Wyoming finished the season No. 14 overall in the FBS in that category, second in the Mountain West behind only San Diego State.
Though his room came away with just one interception -- Markie Grant picked off a pass in a 24-0 blanking of Border War rival Colorado State -- physicality became a trademark of that unit.
Boss capped his redshirt freshman season with 39 tackles and five pass breakups. Miller and Grant both added 27.
"That's something that I pride myself on as a coach and I'm instilling in our guys," Boyd said back in November. "The one thing I tell them is, if anyone calls you a cover-corner, that's disrespectful. It's like we're talking about your mother. We don't allow that. So, we've been very fortunate to have some young men who have embraced that, but more importantly, that's part of their makeup."
Boss and Grant entered the NCAA Transfer Portal in January, landing at Arizona and Utah State, respectively. Miller exhausted his eligibility after one season on the high plains.
Wyoming's return game, which was led by Boyd, came with mixed results in 2025. While the punt team finished 32nd overall in the nation, averaging 11.5 yards an attempt -- that number was aided by a 73-yard return for a touchdown from freshman Deion DeBlanc -- the kickoffs landed at 119 (16.9 ypr) in the FBS out of 134 programs.
Boyd, who will join Sonny Dykes' staff in Fort Worth, will be entering his 26th year on the sidelines this fall after previous stops at Eastern Illinois, Central Washington, Aurora (Ill.) University, North Dakota and Luther College (Iowa).
Former Wyoming assistant Mike Tommerdahl is also on the staff at TCU. He was a graduate assistant in Laramie in 1984 and served various roles on the staffs of Al Kincaid, Dennis Erickson, Paul Roach and Joe Tiller over an 11-year span.
