Which Current Cowboy Seniors are Eligible for a Fifth Year?

LARAMIE -- Dainsus Miller is currently on campus and running through a litany of physical tests.

Jay Sawvel joked earlier in the week that working out at Planet Fitness is much different than getting in football shape.

"We'll see where he kind of is and then judge what the time frame is before we can fully immerse him into play," Wyoming's third-year head coach said Thursday, referring to the senior cornerback.

Miller is back on the roster thanks to a recent court ruling, allowing anyone from the recruiting class of 2022 who exhausted their eligibility last fall to receive an additional year.

Middle linebacker Brayden Johnson is the other former Cowboy who is technically eligible because of a preliminary injunction handed out inside a Colorado courtroom.

"I think he's just going to move on with life," Sawvel said about the All-Mountain West performer during his lone season in Laramie. "He was interested in it, but he's getting married in November.

"... So my expectation right now is he's probably not with us, but we'll see."

This new chaos on the college landscape is a product of the NCAA's new "5-in-5 rule."

"The NCAA Division I age-based eligibility model, finalized June 24, 2026, gives Division I student-athletes up to five years of competition and replaces the previous “four seasons within five years” structure," the NCSA college recruiting website states. "The NCAA age-based eligibility model starts an athlete’s five-year eligibility clock the academic year after they turn 19 or when they first enroll full-time in college, whichever comes first."

What does that mean for Wyoming football?

Sawvel said, to his understanding, four players on his current roster who are entering their senior season, will be eligible to compete in 2027: Defensive end Esaia Bogar, safety Travis Franklin, long snapper Nathan Curry and punter Bart Edmiston.

None of the above started their colligate career at Wyoming.

"I'm just talking guys that are going to be seniors this year, or, in theory, in their last year right now," Sawvel added. "Those would be ones that I'm aware of as of right now."
