RENO, Nev., – University of Wyoming wrestling head coach Mark Branch took a different approach to this year’s Reno Tournament of Champions. In years past, he would have sent his starters and a number of backups and first-year student-athletes to compete inside the Reno Events Center.

This year, however, Branch only took a couple starters and filled in the rest with backups and freshmen. And one of those backups, who happens to be a freshmen, won a title.

Antonio Avila (149) took the crown. He went a perfect 5-0 with five decision wins. That pushes the Gillette, Wyoming, product to an unblemished 14-0 on the season. Reno stood as just his third tournament even as a collegiate athlete.

Riley Davis (174) seized a second-place honor following a 4-1 performance. Ethan Ducca (174) finished third in that same bracket at 4-1 and Quayin Short (174) took fifth with a 3-1 record.

Christian Herrera (141) also impressed, going 4-1 to place fifth after knocking off multiple seeded guys. Sloan Swan (157) rounded out the Cowboy placers, logging a fifth-place finish at 5-1.

As a team, Wyoming went a combined 55-20. A number of Pokes were halted from wrestling more as NCAA rules only allow six matches in a single day.

Wyoming is back in action in a week. It participates in the Soldier Salute Tournament in Coralville, Iowa, from Dec. 29-30.

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
