Behind the numbers: Pokes vs. Broncos
LARAMIE -- Goodbye, 2020 football season.
We hardly knew you.
Wyoming played just six of its eight originally scheduled games this fall. That, of course, was because of COVID-19. The Cowboys didn't have to shut things down, Air Force and Utah State did.
There were some impressive new names this season: Jordan Bertagnole, Easton Gibbs, John Hoyland, Isaiah Neyor, Keonte Glinton and others.
The guys you know -- Xazavian Valladay, Keegan Cryder, Chad Muma, Garrett Crall, and many more -- were up to their old tricks, too.
Finishing 2-4 was not on the docket for this bunch, but, hey, at least they played, right?
Here are some numbers that stood out in the Pokes' season finale, a 17-9 loss to Boise State inside a snow-covered War Memorial Stadium.
51
We have to start right here. This is how many years it's been since radio color man Kevin McKinney has missed a Wyoming home game. That unbelievable streak came to an end thanks to contact tracing. See you next year, Kevin.
64
That’s how many yards Levi Williams and Gavin Beerup combined for against the Broncos' secondary. It's the second consecutive game that a UW quarterback has failed to hit the century mark.
15
That's the number of times these two teams have met on a football field. Look away -- Boise State has won 14 of them.
2,978
That's how many brave souls withstood single-digit temperatures and snow Saturday night to watch the Cowboys play just their second home game of the season.
2,224
Xazavian Valladay has rushed for that many yards in his Wyoming career. Saturday, he passed some pretty impressive names in the program's record books: Walt Goffigan, Kevin Lowe and Derek Armah.
13
That's how many tackles linebacker Easton Gibbs racked up in this one. This was the redshirt freshman's first career start. He replaced Charles Hicks, who was injured last week against New Mexico.
2
That's how many career interceptions CJ Coldon now has. He's done it in back-to-back weeks, too. On the third play from scrimmage Saturday, Hank Bachmeier misfired right into the awaiting arms of the Cowboys' corner.
72
That's how many tackles middle linebacker Chad Muma finished with this season. That ranks him ninth in the nation.
13
John Hoyland has nailed that many field goals during his freshman campaign. He has missed just one kick and is perfect on extra points.
146
That's the number of yards the Cowboys' offense racked up Saturday. That is a season low.
7
That's how many penalties Wyoming committed in this one. It cost the Pokes 58 yards, too. The Cowboys amassed 30 penalties in six games this fall.
2
That's how many third-down conversions UW picked up in 17 tries against the Broncos. The Pokes are 3-for-28 on that money down in the last two weeks.
9
That's how many first downs the Cowboys picked up Saturday night.
