BREAKING: Air Force QB no longer cadet in ‘good standing’ at Academy

LARAMIE -- The Air Force football team could be without its starting quarterback this fall.

The Colorado Springs Gazette Saturday reported that the Falcons' senior signal caller has not met Air Force and Academy standards.

"Donald Hammond is no longer a cadet in good standing and cannot represent the academy in outside activities," Air Force said in a statement to The Gazette.

According to an Academy statement, cadets must meet Air Force and Academy standards, including honor, physical fitness, academics and military aptitude, in order to be a cadet in good standing."

Before the 2019 season, the Falcons' lost leading rusher Cole Fagan for the same reason.

Hammond led Air Force to an 11-2 mark last season, which included an eight-game winning streak and a 31-21 win over Washington State in the Cheez-It Bowl. The Falcons finished the campaign ranked No. 22 in the nation.

Air Force knocked off Wyoming 20-6 in Colorado Springs in the season finale. Hammond completed 5-of-6 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 35 yards and a score in the win.

Hammond threw 13 touchdown passes in 2019 to go along with 1,316 yards through the air. He also rushed for 553 yards. The Hampton, Georgia, product found the end zone on the ground 13 times.

Just last week, Hammond was one of 30 named to the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback watch list. That award is given to the nation's top quarterback. Boise State's Hank Bachmeier is the only other Mountain West signal caller on the list.
