Can’t make it to the Arizona Bowl? This should help
TUCSON, Ariz., -- Sixteen times in its history the Wyoming Cowboys football team has played in a bowl game.
Since Craig Bohl arrived on campus back in 2014, the Pokes have been to three postseason games, including three in the last four seasons. Today, it's Georgia State that stands in the way of Wyoming picking up its eighth bowl victory in program history.
The Panthers are making just their third bowl appearance ever. Doesn't sound impressive, does it?
Well, it is.
GSU has only been a team for a decade. The school's president, Mark Becker, told a pep rally crowd of hundreds Monday night in Tucson that this team started with a coach and a single recruit 10 years ago.
That got me thinking -- How many bowls have certain teams gone to?
Let's start with the MWC:
Colorado State 17
Utah State 13
Fresno State 25
San Jose State 10
Air Force 27
New Mexico 13
Boise State 19
San Diego State 15
Bohl was adamant during his press conference Monday afternoon in downtown Tucson that bowl games still very much matter in the grand scheme of building a program. He said it also serves as a way of bringing communities, fan bases -- and in Wyoming's case -- state's together.
"Bowl games many years ago, when they first started, were really about a community coming together and having a celebration and inviting two college football teams to join them," he said. "And unfortunately, I think, in today's world of college athletics -- and there's some great things with college football -- I think we've lost sight of that a little bit."
And don't lose sight of the fact that Wyoming has more bowl wins than these "Power-5" schools:
Who went there?
We always like to bust out a list of famous alums of the team Wyoming is facing that week. Georgia State definitely has some big names:
Julia Roberts (actress)
Amy Dumas (wrestler, singer)
Wayne Williams (serial killer)
Jody Powell (press secretary for President Jimmy Carter)
Ludacris (rapper, actor)
Keisha Lance Bottoms (Mayor of Atlanta)
Coy Bowles (Zac Brown Band)
William DuVall (Alice in Chains)
Not too shabby.
