LARAMIE -- The University of Wyoming men’s golf team is back in action this week at its own tournament. The Cowboys host the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate from Monday-Wednesday.

The competition takes place at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, California. It’s a par 72 course that stretches 7,305 yards. It’s a 54-hole tournament format with 18 holes played each day beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Fifteen teams make up the field. That list includes Charlotte, Drake, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, South Dakota State, Cal Baptist, UC Santa Barbara, UTSA, Utah Tech, Northern Iowa, Tarleton State, Colorado Christian, Coastal Carolina and Wyoming.

The Cowboys have enjoyed success at their tournament in the last few years. They’ve finished in the top four each of the past three years with a tournament title in 2023. Wyoming also boasts a pair of individual winners in Tyler Severin in 2020 and Gabe Maier in 2009.

“It’s a new year, new group, new field and new experiences, and we don’t want to take anything for granted and stay in the moment,” head coach Joe Jensen said. “We’ve done a good job in our preparation, and we’ve got a lot of good stuff going on, and I want to continue that. We want to be consistent in how we handle our process. We want to do well, but it comes down to our process.”

This marks the Pokes’ second tournament of the spring season. The first one – the Arizona N.I.T. – went swimmingly, as Wyoming fired a 274 (-14) in the final round, which tied for the fourth-best single round team score in school history.

It was a balanced effort from the Cowboys who ended up finishing eighth as a team. Patrick Azevedo led the way in 30th place at 212 (-4).

Azevedo became the fourth Poke to pace the team at a tournament during the 2024-25 season. Kristof Panke has been the tip of the spear twice, while Jaren Calkins and Brody Leid have also led a cohesive Wyoming team.

Following the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, the Cowboys are back in action March 10 and 11. They’re at the Lamkin San Diego Classic at the San Diego Country Club.

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
