CHEYENNE -- In a setting made for Cowboys, No. 25 Wyoming defeated the 27th ranked Campbell Fighting Camels, 28-12, Thursday night at the first-ever Dual at the Daddy in Cheyenne.

Held in the events center on the grounds of Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Cowboys got payback on the Camels after losing the Battle in Barn, 23-12, near Centennial last fall.

“It was exciting. There were some battles and some tough matches and we thought that would be the case,” said Wyoming head coach Mark Branch, who is in his 17th season at the helm. “Last year we had some of those matches that didn’t go our way. The bonus points we got, that’s when you really start dominating the team score.”

Starting off the night was the only ranked matchup among the two wrestlers with Wyoming’s No. 2-ranked Jore Volk taking on No. 13 Anthony Molton at 125 pounds.

After a scoreless -- but exciting -- first period, Molton chose down to start the second frame. Volk, a returning All-American, was able to ride out the period to all but secure the riding time point. In the third period, Volk chose down and was able to get an escape in just 10 seconds and went on to win the match, 2-0.

“The first match is always going to be the hardest but I got through it,” Volk said. “It’s early in the season and I am looking forward to battling and having some scraps and that was a scrap right there. Our styles, they clash weird but make for an exciting match. I have to stay in better position and my scrambles won me that match.”

In what ended up being the most exciting match of the night, Wyoming’s Stockton O’Brien grappled with 15th-ranked Domenic Zaccone. After an action packed first period ended all tied up at 4-4, Zaccone chose down to start the second and was able to get a quick escape in the first nine seconds. The two wrestled on their feet for the next 40 seconds until O’Brien caught Zaccone in a headlock.

That resulted in a pin with 1:03 left in the period, giving the Pokes a 9-0 lead.

Other wins by the Cowboys included Cole Brooks at 141 pounds, Jared Hill with a gutty sudden-victory win at 157 pounds, Cooper Voorhees at 165 pounds, Eddie Neitenbach at 187 pounds and a pin by 10th-ranked Joey Novak at 197 pounds.

“I don’t think we wrestled great. I think we can wrestle a lot better,” Branch added. “When the going got tough our guys stepped up and got their hand raised, so from that standpoint it’s pretty satisfying.”

Next up for the Pokes is a dual against Western Wyoming on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. in Laramie.
