Cowgirl golf remains steady at Bobcat Desert Classic

GOODYEAR, Ariz., – Cowgirl golf remained in fifth after Tuesday's second round of the Bobcat Desert Classic on the par-72, 6,154-yard Golf Course of Estrella.

Wyoming, which has been led by senior Meghan Vogt (+4) and junior Grace Dunkleberger (+4) through 36 holes, shot 300 in the second round and is +19 for the tournament.

Weber State (+1) leads the team 10-team field with a score of 577, which is one clear of Idaho and Montana State.

"We played better than we scored as a team today," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It was another round where we didn't feel fully comfortable with the green speed, and it was wearing on our patience. …

"We are not going to deviate from our plan and just continue to be patient on the greens to have a stronger result."

Vogt and Dunkleberger are tied for 18th place. Senior Kyla Wilde (+5) and freshman Kira Reisner (+6) are also in the top 25.

"Meg and Kyla were very dependable again, and Grace fought hard to finish with back-to-back birdie chip-ins," Stender said.

Idaho's Zoe Newell (-7) has a three-shot cushion on the individual leaderboard.

Lucia Morelli, playing as an individual, is in contention for medalist honors at -2 after following her 70 in the opening round with a 72 on Tuesday. The UW freshman is tied for fifth entering the final round.

"It is good to see Lucia feel more confident and put herself in position for a stellar finish," Stender said.

The Cowgirls are looking to find their best form entering the Mountain West Championship April 15-17 in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
