Cowgirl tennis Opens Play at rival CSU

FORT COLLINS, Colo., – The Wyoming Cowgirls began their busy week of action Friday afternoon on day one of the Jon Messick Invitational, hosted by Colorado State. Nikol Dobrilova and Lucia Malinak represented UW down at CSU.
Malinak opened her tournament action with a straight-sets, 6-3 and 6-2 win in the opening round of Flight “C” action over New Mexico’s Sofia Taborga. Malinak will now face Annaliese County of Utah State Saturday. Dobrilova, meanwhile, lost 6-2, 6-2 to UNM’s Hsuan Huang and will now face South Dakota’s Grace Chadick in consolation action.
Dobrilova and Malinak also played as a doubles tandem Friday, losing to Weber State’s Davies and Semenik, 6-4.
The Cowgirls will also be in action this week in Cary, N.C., for the ITA All-America Championships. Play begins at that event Saturday with Noesjka Brink, Ana Fernandez, Maria Oreshkina and Sophie Zehender competing for Wyoming.
The four student-athletes representing the Cowgirls are the most sent to the All-Americas in program history while Maria Oreshkina, who will be playing as a qualifier, is the first Cowgirl to do that since Veronica Popovici in the fall of 2013.
