FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened its weekend of action in impressive fashion Saturday, defeating UTEP, 4-0.

Saturday’s match was played on the campus of Northern Arizona.

The Cowgirls (4-4) went to work quickly toward their victory in the match, taking the doubles point easily. Wyoming got wins at the first and second spots Saturday, in convincing manner.

The team of Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender improved to 6-0 in dual matches this spring with a 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Noesjka Brink and Nikol Dobrilova were victorious, 6-2. Jeselle Ante and Lucia Malinak were leading their match at No. 3, 5-2 when the point was clinched by the Cowgirls.

In singles, the Cowgirls got wins at Nos. 1, 5 and 6 against the Miners. Zehender took her matchup at the No. 1 position, 6-3 and 6-4. At No. 5, Ante won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. While at the sixth spot, Malinak also won easily, 6-2 and 6-0.

“I thought we played solid doubles today all-around,” said Head Coach Dean Clower after the match.

“On every line at doubles, I felt we were playing our style of tennis. In singles, we jumped out early on many of the lines and the energy continued throughout for us. We need to be ready for another battle tomorrow (Sunday) as NAU is a very well-coached team.”

UW will face host Northern Arizona Sunday at 10 a.m., to conclude the swing away from home this weekend.
