LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team travels to Casper, Wyo., for an outreach event dual against Montana State Friday, October 29 at 6 p.m., at the 307 Tennis Club. Friday’s contest will be a rare dual match played during the fall for UW.
“We wanted to go to Casper because we had been there before for an outreach event and we had a big crowd there last time we were there and I wanted to get the girls out to see the rest of the state,” said UW head coach Dean Clower. “We have some of the best fans and great fan support for tennis here in Wyoming. A lot of the fans that come down to our matches are from Casper, so why not go up to them for a match?”
The Cowgirls are coming off a multiple-day tournament at the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by UNLV Oct. 13-17. Maria Oreshkina and Sophie Zehender both made it to the quarterfinals of the event in singles’ play, while the doubles team of Zehender and partner Ana Fernandez made it to the Quarterfinal Round on the doubles’ side of things at the regionals.
Zehender currently leads the Cowgirls with five singles victories so far this fall while Noesjka Brink and Maria Oreshkina both have four wins over two tournaments. In doubles play, Brink and Mihaela Kaftanova leads UW with a 4-2 record, while Fernandez and Zehender are 3-3.
Friday’s dual will be the Cowgirls’ final competition of the fall. After facing MSU, Wyoming is off until January where it will begin spring play at the Tulsa Invitational, slated for Jan. 15 and 16.
