LARAMIE -- The first official day of basketball practice opened Monday afternoon for the Wyoming Cowgirls to kick off the 2023-24 season. The Cowgirls have begun prep for season two under Head Coach Heather Ezell.

UW is coming off a 23-11 record last season, a second-place finish in the Mountain West and an appearance in the Mountain West Tournament Championship Game in 2022-23. The Cowgirls also made the second round of the Women's NIT last season, Wyoming's fifth consecutive postseason appearance.

The Cowgirls open play November 2 with an exhibition contest against Western Colorado. The regular season tips Nov. 6 with North Dakota coming to town. Both contests are set for 6:30 p.m., start times.

Prior to the season start, Wyoming will be hosting an Outreach Event October 27 in Sheridan. The Cowgirls will host an open practice at the Golden Dome at Sheridan College with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Practice will run until approximately 7 p.m., with autographs to follow.

The 2023-24 Cowgirls welcome back a trio of All-Mountain West performers in Allyson Fertig (All-MW Team) and Malene Pedersen (2023 MW Freshman of the Year). Wyoming also welcomes back 2022 All-Mountain West Team member McKinley Dickerson (formerly Bradshaw). Also returning to the squad are letterwinners Tess BarnesEmily MellemaGrace MoyersPaula SalazarMarta SavicOla Ustowska and Baily Wilborn.

Five newcomers will be playing their first seasons in the Brown & Gold in 2023-24. Those include freshmen Mikyn Hamlin (Hugoton, Kan.), Maren McKenna (Hyde Park, Utah), Kati Ollilainen (Helsinki, Finland) and Madi Symons (Coeur d' Alene, Idaho). Joslin Igo (Douglas) transfers into UW after spending the previous two seasons at Casper CC.
