Cowgirls Take Care of Buffalo in Home Opener

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened its 2024 home slate with a convincing 5-2 win over Buffalo, Wednesday afternoon at the Laramie Tennis Complex. The Cowgirls clinched the match at 4-0, but the two teams played out the rest of the contest.

The Cowgirls (2-3) won a thriller of a doubles point, clinching with a tiebreak victory at No. 2. The tandem of Noesjka Brink and Nikol Dobrilova pulled out the victory for Wyoming, winning 7-6 (7-3). Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender also picked up a doubles win Wednesday. The duo moved to 4-0 together this spring by making quick work of their opponent, 6-0.

Brink was able to clinch the match victory for UW in exciting fashion. After winning the first set 6-3, Brink trailed 5-2 in the second set before rattling off five-straight game victories to win the second, 7-5. The Cowgirls already led the team score 3-0 thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 4 prior to Brink’s victory.

Jeselle Ante was the first to claim a singles win as she took care of business 6-0, 6-3 at the fourth spot. Zehender, meanwhile, earned a 6-1 and 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot. Lucia Malinak also got a singles win on the day as she won her super set matchup, 4-6, 6-1 and 1-0 (10-7).

Wednesday was the first of two consecutive contests at home for the Cowgirls. UW is done for the month of January and will return home for a February 2 contest against UNCG.
