University Place, Wash., – Wyoming Cowgirls golf opened the 2024-25 season on Monday at the Leadership & Golf Invitational played on the demanding Chambers Bay GC.
The Cowgirls are currently 16th in the team standings with a two-round 618 (+42). UW shot a collective 307 (+19) in the morning round and a 311 (+23) in the second round.
USC (571) leads the event at -5 on the Chambers Bay course which hosted the 2015 men's U.S. Open. Oregon State (573) is the only other team in the 16-team field under par at -3 with Colorado (576) at even par.
"What a great opportunity to play a U.S. Open golf course today," UW head coach Josey Stender said. "It was a long mental and physical grind for the team. We had a lot of great golf shots but missed too many putts that we just can't against this caliber of field."
UW's two seniors, Meghan Vogt (152, +8) and Kyla Wilde (144, +10), are 53rd and 66th on the individual leader board, respectively, to pace the team.
Freshman Lucia Morelli, who is from nearby Mercer Island, Wash., is tied with teammate Sophie Spiva of Casper for 73rd after they both shot 156 (+12)
Sophomore Samantha Spielman of Sheridan rounds out the Cowgirls' scoring at +14 (158).
"Overall, I was very proud of their positive attitude and determination," Stender said. "We will need to maintain that great attitude (Tuesday) but also get some putts to fall to improve our standing."
The Cowgirls will conclude the Leadership & Golf Invitational hosted by Seattle University and Washington with the third round on Tuesday before returning to action at the Colonel Wollenberg Ram Classic hosted by Colorado State next Monday in Windsor, Colo.
