LARAMIE -- Craig Bohl calls it "important" and "heartwarming" when he lands a commitment from an in-state football recruit.

Before the Cowboys hosted Hawaii in their home finale last month, the veteran head coach said he was in hopes good news was coming down the pike in that department.

It came roughly 48 hours after that 42-9 rout of the Rainbow Warriors.

Sheridan's Alex Haswell announced on social media that Monday he would be staying home. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound 4A Lineman of the Year, fresh off his third consecutive state championship, penned a simple note.

"Thank you to my family for always pushing me and driving around the state and, sometimes out of state, to support me," Haswell wrote in part. "With that being said, I am proud to announce that I am committing to the University of Wyoming."

Haswell, who capped his senior season with 34 tackles, including seven for loss, a sack and a forced fumble, will line up at defensive end for the Pokes. He was named to the 2022 Casper Star-Tribune Super 25 team, along with future UW teammates Cody Crawford (Natrona County - Casper) and Kayden LaFramboise (Thunder Basin - Gillette)

Wyoming currently has 13 natives on the roster. Haswell knows full well how unique of an opportunity this is to play in Laramie.

"It was really special," he said. "I really wasn’t sure what would happen, but I knew that if I got the opportunity, I would take it. I have been watching the Pokes ever since I started playing football and it has always been a dream to play for the Cowboys."

Haswell fielded six other offers this offseason, including from regional schools like Black Hills State, Chadron, Montana Tech and others.

He had his heart set on one.

"I’ve thought a lot about not even just putting on the game jersey but also the practice jersey," Haswell said. "I'm really excited about being able to practice against some of the best and be able to learn from some of the best coaches, as well. With playing, I know I’ll be nervous. Playing in front of my home state is something I’ve always wanted to do, so my excitement is through the roof."

The NCAA's early signing day is set for Dec. 20.
