LARAMIE, Wyo. — The University of Wyoming Track & Field student athletes who qualified for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships West Preliminaries head to College Station, Texas, to compete this week for a spot in this year’s championships. 

In total for the Pokes, three throwers and three jumpers qualified for the prelims as well as one Distance runner. On the Cowboys side, Kareem Mersal (Long Jump), William Nolan (Long Jump and Triple Jump), Colton Paller (Discus), Albert Steiner (3000M Steeplechase) and Kirk Unland (Hammer) will be competing next week. Nolan is the lone Wyoming student-athlete to qualify in multiple events while Paller is the highest qualifier at 15th in the region with his first-place throw of 189-0 from last weekend at the 2021 Mountain West Outdoor Championships. 

Sadie McMullen (Long Jump) and Mary Carbee (Hammer) are the qualifiers on the women’s side. McMullen and Carbee both moved in to the UW All-Time Top-10 Event list in their respective events with their qualifying marks. McMullen and Mersal are the two Wyoming freshman to qualify. 

Unland, Mersal and Nolan will kick off the week’s slate for the Pokes as the Hammer Throw and Long Jump are scheduled to take place on Wednesday. Carbee and McMullen will compete the following day on Thursday while Paller, Nolan and Steiner will cap things off for Wyoming with the Discus, Triple Jump and Steeplechase on Friday afternoon.

All seven student athletes for Wyoming have managed to break into, or improve their rankings, on the UW All-Time Top 10 List in their respective events this outdoor season. 

Qualifying to the NCAA Championships site is accomplished through performance in the Preliminary Round competition. Twelve competitors from each individual event and twelve teams from each relay event advance from each Preliminary Round site.

The individual event student-athletes and relay teams accepted into Championships competition based on their performance at Preliminary Round competition will be announced and posted on NCAA.com the week prior to Championships competition. The championships, scheduled for June 9-12, will be held in Eugene, Ore.
