LARAMIE -- Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel said in late March his starting punter wasn't even on campus yet.

He is now.

Bart Edmiston Jr., a former NJCAA All-American and two-time all-conference selection at Jones College (Miss.), will sign with the Cowboys, he confirmed Saturday, after visiting Laramie for the annual Brown and Gold Spring game.

He made it all official Monday with a social-media post.

“When I first arrived in Laramie, it was not what I was expecting. It was astonishing, Edmiston told 7220sports.com. "After meeting all the coaches, players and staff, I knew this was the place I was meant to be.”

The Ocean Springs native, who was one of five potential transfers in attendance inside War Memorial Stadium, has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Gavyn Helm has been handling punting duties throughout spring camp. The redshirt freshman from Windsor, Colo., also serves as the team's holder on special teams.

Edmiston, who stands 6 feet and weighs in at 190 pounds, was the MACCC South Special Teams Player of the Year in 2023, the same season he landed second team All-American honors. He led the nation in punting that season, setting a new single-season record with an average of 44.6 yards per attempt.

The junior dropped 22 punts inside the 20-yard line. Sixteen traveled at least 50 yards and three times Edmiston eclipsed 60. He also had a career-best 65-yard boot.

Consistency has been Edmiston's calling card.

He averaged 44.8 yard per kick last fall, and 23 times pinned his opponent inside the 20. He added a dozen more boots of 50-plus yards. He also averaged 61.3 on kickoffs, with eight touchbacks.

This was all at sea level.

Edmiston, who according to 247sports was offered by LSU and Southern Miss out of high school, also served as the Bobcats' placekicker during the '23 campaign, drilling 9-of-13 attempts, including a long of 48. He also connected on 29 point-after attempts. Wyoming is likely tabbing Eric Sandvik the starting kicker this fall. He only attempted two field goals during his prep career at Steamboat Springs High School in Colorado.

Edmiston will replace senior Jack Culbreath, who during his lone season in Laramie averaged just 38.2 yards per punt, landing seventh overall in the 12-team Mountain West. That ranked 82nd nationally out of 133 FBS programs.

No conference team punted more times than the Cowboys, who capped the season with 66. The next closest team was Border War rival Colorado State with 61.

Edmiston's father, Bart Edmiston, was a placekicker at the University of Florida from 1992-96. He still ranks second on the school's all-time scoring list and once made 114 consecutive extra points, an NCAA record that stood for a decade. He helped lead the Gators to a national championship during his senior season.

His son was a standout at OSHS, serving at the Greyhounds' punter and kicker. He was named a First Team All-State selection in the 6A Conference, the largest classification in the state.

The newest Cowboy also earned a roster spot for the annual Alabama/ Mississippi Prep Football All-Star Classic following his senior season.

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
