Volk, Novak Advance to Semifinals of Soldier Salute Tournament

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The University of Wyoming wrestling team competed in the Soldier Salute Tournament on Friday inside Xtreme Arena. The Cowboys boast a couple of wrestlers in the semifinals after one day of competition.
No. 7 Jore Volk (125) continued in his winning ways Friday and did so in convincing fashion. He outscored his two foes by a combined tally of 33-4 – one technical fall and one major decision – to improve to 13-3 on the season.
No. 15 Joey Novak (197) advanced via a pair of decisions to push his overall record to 13-6. His 13-7 quarterfinal win over Columbia’s No. 28 Jack Wehmeyer gave Novak a team-best five wins this season over ranked grapplers.
Cooper Birdwell (133) and Stockton O’Brien (141) extended their tournaments in the consolation bracket. Birdwell logged one win in his first bout of the day and responded from his first loss with a pair of victories, improving to 8-9 on the year.
O’Brien followed the same path, however, registered a technical fall and a major decision in his two wins of the consolation bracket. He’s 10-4 this season.
Session 3 begins Friday at 10 a.m. The fourth and final session commences at 4 p.m.
