LARAMIE -- If Wyoming wants to replace Clemson with a Power-5 matchup, it wont have many teams to chose from.

While most programs have future non-conference game scheduled years in advance -- including the Cowboys, who were set to play Clemson Sept. 25, 2021 in South Carolina -- just four teams have an opening on that date.

The University of Miami, Southern Cal, Tennessee and Mississippi State.

The latter two squads, both members of the Southeastern Conference, play an eight-game league schedule, leaving room for four non-conference opponents. The only requirement is the Volunteers, Bulldogs and the other 12 conference schools must play at least one P-5 program in their non-conference slate.

Tennessee will host Pittsburgh Sept. 11 in Knoxville. That same day, Mike Leach's Mississippi State team will face North Carolina State in Starkville.

The Miami Hurricanes, an ACC team, also have an opening on Sept. 25. They are required to play just eight conference games, too. So far, Miami will take on Alabama Sept. 4 in Atlanta, host Appalachian State and Michigan State the following two weeks.

Miami still needs an additional non-conference game to reach the 12-game maximum schedule. FBS teams are allowed to play 13 regular season contests if they travel to Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors can also play 13 to offset travel costs.

PAC 12, Big XII and Big Ten teams all play nine-game conference schedules.

Wednesday night, USC athletic director Mike Bohn confirmed that the Trojans will pay $725,000 to get out of a contract with UC Davis, who was supposed to play in the Los Angeles Coliseum Sept. 4. UC Davis would've been the first FCS school USC has played in its history.

Bohn said displeasure from the fan base prompted the school to change course.

USC is set to host BYU (Nov. 2) and travel to Notre Dame (Oct. 23) during its 2021 non-conference schedule, according to usctrojans.com. UC Davis was the only game scheduled for September. The Pac 12 as not released its conference schedule yet.

Bohn told USCFootball.com that USC is in the “final stages of formalizing an agreement” with an FBS opponent to "open" the 2021 season. Wyoming is scheduled to host Montana State in its 2021 season opener on that same day, Sept. 4.

The Cowboys will travel to Northern Illinois the following week and Ball State will pay a visit to War Memorial Stadium Sept. 18.

Tuesday it was announced that Clemson would be dropping the 2021 scheduled game against the Cowboys in favor of an opening-day meeting with Georgia. The Greenville News announced Wednesday that the school will pay Wyoming $1.1 million for breaking its contract.

The Cowboys are 1-2 all-time against Tennessee. Wyoming knocked off the Volunteers, 13-7, in Knoxville back in 2008. USC and Wyoming have met just once. That was a 56-6 loss in Los Angeles back in 1965. The Pokes have never faced Mississippi State or Miami.

Correction: In the original version of this story it was said Wyoming had never played USC. The schools have met once back in 1965. We regret this error.
