Cowgirls Dominate Singles in Road Victory Over New Mexico

ALBUEQUERQUE, N.M., – The Wyoming Cowgirls dominated singles play on their way to a 4-1 win Saturday at New Mexico. The Cowgirls got straight-set victories from Nos. 1 through 3 in the win while Serina Abriola’s three-set victory at No. 6 clinched the Cowgirl win.

After losing doubles, Wyoming had some work to do but responded in a big way to win the four singles contests to propel it to victory.

“We didn’t come out the way we needed to and put ourselves in a good hole early,” said Head Coach Dean Clower.

“After doubles, I felt we were much better with our intensity and playing Cowgirl Tennis. Anastasiia (Kochelaevskaia) and Silver (Bijlsma) took care of business quickly and that took a little pressure off the rest of the girls for the moment. For the three that were on the courts still for their third sets, I couldn’t be more proud of the effort today and it was fittingly capped off by Serina, who was an absolute warrior today.”

Kochelaevskaia won 6-0 and 6-3 at No. 1 to get the Cowgirls on the board first. That was followed quickly by victories from Bijlsma at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-2 and Violetta Borodina at the third spot, 6-4, 6-2. Abriola finished things off with a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6 and 6-3 win at No. 6.

Next week, the Cowgirls return to action with split road and home action. Wyoming travels to face San Diego State Friday and will return home for a Sunday contest against Grand Canyon Sunday at 10 a.m.
