Wyoming Drops Five-Setter at Nevada

RENO, Nev., – The Wyoming Cowgirls came up short in a five-setter Thursday night on the road at Nevada. It was an up-and-down night for the Cowgirls in the loss as set scores went 25-22, 19-25, 20-25, 16-25 and 15-13.

Wyoming (8-10, 4-3 MW) led by as many as five points in the decisive fifth set, at 6-1 and 7-2. However, the Wolf Pack was able to respond in the frame, surging in front 12-10 thanks to a 10-3 run. The Cowgirls would get to within one point, twice, the rest of the way as Nevada closed things out in the match with a kill.

The Cowgirls hit .228 in the loss while holding Nevada to a .169 clip. UW also enjoyed a near double advantage, 15-8 in team blocks and also had a 9-7 edge in service aces. But, the Wolf Pack recorded 20 more kills (65-45) than the Cowgirls and had 10 more (55-45) digs on the night.

Claire Wagstaff was the only Cowgirl with double figure kills as she led the way with 12. Wagstaff was also extremely efficient on the night, hitting .478 in the loss. Addy Cook, Sarah Holcomb and Paige Lauterwasser all added eight kills with Cook hitting an even .400. Holcomb led all players with eight total blocks in the contest. Jordan Sandy had seven blocks while Cook chipped in with five.

Defensively in the back row, Lauterwasser led Wyoming with 10 digs in the loss. Skylar Erickson and Maddy Stucky added eight and seven, respectively. Sara Quigley paced the Cowgirls with 20 assists against the Wolf Pack while Stucky had16. Sandy set a career-high with four service aces on the evening.

UW now looks to move back into the win column with a Saturday primetime contest at Air Force. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
