Behind the numbers: Wyoming vs. SJSU
LARAMIE -- The numbers weren't pretty after this one.
In fact, Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl said he typically likes to reserve judgement until he looks at the tape. Not tonight.
"I saw what I saw," he said.
Wyoming's offense was stagnant and the defense gave up way too many big plays. In the end, though, this one was likely decided on the line of scrimmage. Advantage, visitors. The Cowboys rushed for just 143 yards on 31 carries. Awful? No. But consider this, 61 of those came on one run from Andrew Peasley. He's the quarterback.

It was tough sledding in the rushing department, among many other areas.
Here are some stats that stood out in this one:
13
That's how many times these teams have now met on a football field. The Cowboys hold a slim 7-6 advantage, but SJSU has claimed five of the last six.
1-4
That's Wyoming's record against the Spartans since they joined the Mountain West in 2013.
5
The Cowboys have scored on that many straight opening drives. Unfortunately, those have all been John Hoyland field goals.
1
Sheridan native Parker Christensen hauled in his first-career touchdown pass in this one. The tight end snagged a 13 yarder in the third quarter. Wyatt Wieland also tacked on his first-ever touchdown reception. That was a 38-yard rainbow off the right arm of Peasley in the second quarter.
61
That is the longest run of the season for Wyoming. UW QB Andrew Peasley did that in the third quarter.
7
UW safety Wyett Ekeler had a career night, racking up seven tackles, six of the solo variety.
11
Easton Gibbs tallied a career-high 11 tackles in the loss to the Spartans. It's the eighth time he's his double digits during his career.
36-of-42
Hoyland was true on his one field-goal attempt tonight. That came from 42 yards out. The number of above represents his career numbers.
36:52
That's how long the Spartans' offense was on the field during this one. The visitors ran 76 plays. UW, 53.
25
That's how many first down SJSU picked up in this one. Wyoming finished with just 10.
4-of-12
Peasley's stat line in the first half started with these numbers above. The Cowboys QB amassed just 68 yards through the air. One of those was a 38-yard touchdown hookup with Wyatt Wieland in the second quarter. Peasley, a Utah State transfer, started this one 0-of-6. He finished this one 6-of-20 for 85 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
43
That's how many rushing yards the Cowboys racked up against the Spartans during the first two quarters. Titus Swen led the way with just 26 yards on nine attempts. He finished with just 61 yards on 17 attempts and the Cowboys capped their night with 143 yards on 31 carries.
5
That's how many first downs Wyoming picked up in the first half. SJSU, 14.
219
That's the number of passing yards SJSU quarterback Chevan Cordeiro threw for in the first half. He added one passing touchdown -- a seven-yard strike to Skylar Loving-Black -- and found the end zone with his legs from one yard out. That damage all came in the second quarter. Cordeiro connected on 14-of-24 throws in the first two quarters. He capped his night by completing 21-of-37 throws for 314 yards.
2
Swen took a shotgun handoff in his own end zone in the first frame and was dumped for a safety, giving SJSU its first points of the night. Noah Wright was credited with the stop.
100
Elijah Cooks had that many receiving yards in the first half. The Nevada transfer also hauled in a 52-yarder from Cordeiro to set up the Spartans final touchdown of the second quarter. He finished with a team-best 177 yards on eight grabs.

25
After Peasley briefly went down with an injury after the Cowboys first offensive snap of the evening, back-up Jayden Clemons was inserted and promptly dropped a beauty into the breadbasket of Joshua Cobbs for a 25-yard gainer. That was Clemons' first collegiate completion. He was yanked for Peasley on the following play.
20:20
SJSU held onto the ball for this many minutes in the first half. Wyoming, 9:40.
44
The Spartans ran that many plays in the first two quarters. The Cowboys took just 25 snaps. Much of that has to do with the visitors converting on 4-of-7 third downs. On a drive in the first quarter, Cordeiro was true on a pair of 3rd-and-8 passes and connected with Justin Lockhart on a 3rd-and-21. Luckily for UW that drive ended with a missed field goal from 26 yards out.
