Behind the Numbers: Wyoming's Spring Game

LARAMIE -- Told you Wyoming's offense would look different.

Just how out of the ordinary did it appear during Thursday's spring game inside War Memorial Stadium?

Wyoming quarterbacks -- Evan Svoboda, Jayden Clemons, Kaden Anderson and Gage Brook -- combined to throw for 513 yards while attempting a grand total of 84 passes. More than 50 tosses landed in the arms of a receiver, including a dozen into the hands of true freshman Chris Durr Jr. He also accounted for 121 of those yards.

The Cowboys' offense ran 130 plays, far more than they ever did in the Craig Bohl era, per head coach Jay Sawvel.

"I thought our team did a really good job today," he added. "Coach Bohl always had a standard on spring games, he's like, 'make it look like football.' Really, by and large, I thought today it looked like football."

That's the number of yards starting quarterback Evan Svoboda threw for in Thursday's spring game. The junior signal caller connected on 17-of-27 throws, including a 37-yard touchdown toss to Kayden LaFramboise late in the fourth quarter.

That's how many yards senior running back DJ Jones accounted for inside War Memorial Stadium, including 35 through the air via a screen pass in the third quarter. The North Carolina transfer averaged 6.4 yards per attempt and finished with 77 yards on the ground on just 12 carries.

Chris Durr Jr. led all receivers with that many catches on Thursday afternoon. He rolled up a game-high 121 yards, hauling in throws from Jayden Clemons and Kaden Anderson.

That's the number of receiving yards wideout Justin Stevenson finished with in the spring game. He did that damage on just five catches.

Wyoming running backs combined for this many yards on 46 carries. Tyler Jacklich, who is currently in the NCAA Transfer Portal, finished with 32 yards on six carries. Jamari Ferrell capped his day with 29 yards on 11 attempts and Harrison Waylee rolled up just 22 yards on four carries. Sam Scott also only carried the ball four times. He ended his day with 17 rushing yards.

Linebacker Micah Young led all tacklers Thursday and added a quarterback sack in the process. Ethan Day, a sophomore defensive end, tallied six stops to go along with two sacks. Fellow edge rusher Jordan Turnbull also registered a QB takedown.

That's the average combined yardage per punt off the right foot of Erik Sandvik (40 yards, 3 punts) and Keelan Anderson (28 yards, 5 punts).

That's the number of touchdowns scored by these two teams on Thursday in Laramie. DJ Jones bullied his way into the end zone from seven yards out in the second quarter and fellow running back Sam Scott followed that with an 8-yard scamper for the score. Evan Svoboda found Kayden LaFramboise down the east sideline for a 37-yard touchdown toss with just 2:17 remaining in regulation.

That's the number of fumbles lost in this one. Tight end Isaac Schoenfeld, who capped his day with five grabs for 45 yards, fumbled in the red zone in the first quarter. DJ Jones also coughed up the ball inside the 5-yard line. That appeared to happen on the exchange from Svoboda. Chris Durr also lost a ball attempting to pick up an extra yard.

That's the number of yellow hankies that hit the turf. The Brown Team (Starting offense) was hampered by penalties all afternoon, including a number of holding calls.

That's the combined third-down conversion rate. The Gold Team, led by Jayden Clemons and Kaden Anderson, converted 7-of-15 on that money down.

Wyoming's offensive units scored on three of four trips to the red zone Thursday in Laramie. Erik Sandvik drilled a 20-yard field goal to open the scoring and DJ Jones and Sam Scott both found the end zone from inside the 10. Jones' first-half fumble is the lone blemish.

John Hoyland connected on his one field goal attempt of the afternoon. The senior boomed the 47 yarder between the uprights in the south end zone.

Wyoming will travel to Tempe to take on Arizona State in the regular season opener in this many days. The date is Aug. 31. The location, Sun Devil Stadium.

Did you know it would take the populations of Gillette (32,857), Laramie (32,381), Rock Springs (23,319), Sheridan (17,844) and Wright (1,200) to create a sellout inside Michigan's famed 107,601-seat Big House, the largest college football stadium in the nation?

For those of you not familiar with the Cowboy State, those are Wyoming's third through sixth most inhabited cities, along with the small mining town in Campbell County.
