BREAKING: Levi Williams named Pokes starting QB at SJSU

LARAMIE -- Levi Williams will be the starting quarterback on the road against San Jose State this upcoming Saturday.

Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl announced the move Tuesday afternoon.

Williams will replace Sean Chambers, who started the first seven games of the season under center for the Cowboys. In Chambers' last two outings -- home losses to Fresno State and New Mexico -- the redshirt sophomore has completed just 41% of his passes. He has also lost a fumble and thrown four interceptions during that time frame.

Wyoming has scored just three points in its last 10 quarters, dating back to the second half of a 24-14 loss in Colorado Springs on Oct. 9.

Williams, a 6-foot-5, 224-pound redshirt freshman, was inserted into the New Mexico game in the second quarter. He completed 3-of-7 passes for 51 yards and rushed for 23 yards on five attempts.

The Canyon Lake, Texas product started five of the Cowboys' six games during the virus-shortened 2020 season. He was forced into action on Wyoming's second offensive possession in the opener at Nevada after Chambers suffered a season-ending leg injury.

Williams completed 49.6% of his passes while leading the Cowboys to a 2-4 record. Williams, who was dealing with a shoulder injury sustained in a Week 2 victory over Hawaii, threw just one touchdown pass all season and added six more on the ground.

Williams burst on the scene during his true freshman season. He played sparingly over the final few weeks of the regular season, but in the Arizona Bowl, Williams earned his first start. Against Georgia State, he completed 11-of-26 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns. He ran for another in the Cowboys' 38-17 win over the Panthers.

Wyoming and San Jose State are slated for a 2 p.m. MST kickoff this Saturday inside CEFCU Stadium. The game will be televised on FS2.
