Jayden Williams Issues Apology For Altercations With CSU Fans

LARAMIE -- "Going viral" isn't always a good thing.

Wyoming defensive tackle Jayden Williams Saturday was captured on film taking out his frustrations on a number of Colorado State fans following a 35-13 loss to their Border War rivals.

After the final cannon blast, fans -- mainly students -- poured over the walls and began to rush toward the north end zone.

In order to get there, they had to run through the Cowboys, who were headed toward the visiting locker room.

Williams, a 294-pound junior defensive tackle, was seen tripping one fan, shoving another and not making any attempt to avoid another, sending them all to the turf inside Canvas Stadium.

Multiple cell-phone cameras picked up the postgame altercations.

On Tuesday night, the Bryan, Texas product responded on social media to the outpouring of criticism.

"I want to formally apologize for my actions after the game last Saturday," Williams said in a 33-second video posted on X. "I apologize to not only Colorado State fans but the Colorado State University. I also want to apologize to the Wyoming Cowboy fans. I made a mistake and I apologize for my actions. I did not represent the school and the program the correct way."

Jay Sawvel was asked a two-part question during his Monday press conference: the first being whether he was aware of the incidents and if that had been addressed. Wyoming's third-year head coach said the issue would be handled "in-house."

"Obviously, we don't condone that: from players to fans or anything from that standpoint," he added. "That'll be something that we address team-wide, as well. That's not the way that we're going to operate."

He was then asked if what transpired is an example of the dangers of field rushes, something Sawvel said happens with regularity in Laramie after big home wins.

When it comes to the stadium in Fort Collins, he continued, there's a simple fix that would keep fans from even crossing paths with the opposing team.

"They could put us on the other sideline, and we could come right out our tunnel, and we'd be right back in our tunnel," he said.

Williams, who represented UW at the annual Mountain West Media Days in Las Vegas last July, capped the opener with three stops and assisted on a tackle in the backfield.

Wyoming defensive coordinator Aaron Bohl had yet to view the video on Monday afternoon during player-coach availability with the local media. He said he heard about it, adding defensive tackles coach Deonte Gibson had already addressed the matter with Williams.

"I trust that Jay and Deonte will handle it whatever way is appropriate," Bohl said.

The Cowboys will host Northern Colorado Saturday in their home opener. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed exclusively on MW+.
