LARAMIE -- Patrick Broadway's first season in Laramie lasted just a handful of plays.

The true freshman running back announced Friday on social media he will miss the entire 2025 campaign with a torn ACL and meniscus.

He is the third Cowboy to suffer a season-ending injury over the last few weeks, joining defensive tackles Dante Drake and Caleb Robinson, who both ruptured their Achilles tendon.

Broadway, a 5-foot-11, 216-pound Houston product, was injured early in Wyoming's first practice of fall camp. It was initially thought to be a "lower hamstring" pull.

The eventual diagnosis came as a shock to his head coach.

"Structurally, there really wasn't a lot wrong," Jay Sawvel said Friday during his post-practice press conference. "When you look at him right now, he's not any kind of brace, and he's walking with no limp.

"Everyone was kind of surprised to find that there was a tear in the ACL."

Sawvel admitted Broadway had a leg issue in summer, but was still front squatting 450 pounds.

"Which is insane," he continued. "We'll get that fixed and he'll be fine."

Broadway inked with the program during the late signing period in February after rushing for 2,134 yards during his final season at Fulshear High School. He was named the District 20-6A Offensive MVP after eclipsing the 100-yard mark on the ground in 12 games. He also scored an eye-popping 25 touchdowns.

Broadway amassed nearly 4,000 yards on the ground during his prep career in the highest classification in the state of Texas and earned First Team All-District Honors three times in the process.

Along with Wyoming, Broadway gave some serious thought to Prairie View A&M, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Concordia-St. Paul.

He also received interest from Lincoln University (Missouri), Sterling College (Kansas), Millsaps College (Miss.), Maryville College (Tenn.), Midwestern State (Texas), Hardin-Simmons and East Texas Baptist.

"I think he's kind of a victim of 2025 recruiting in the sense with transfer portals and numbers of schools taking less and less high school players," Sawvel said on signing day. "This was a guy that had a lot of people talk to him, but no one was pulling a trigger on him. And a lot of times, it's like, once there's one offer, then there becomes a dozen."

Sawvel announced Friday that Samuel "Tote" Harris, a fellow rookie running back from Texas, will not redshirt this fall.

Senior Sam Scott is still in the mix. So is Iowa transfer Max White and Damashja Harris, who suited up for North Texas last fall. Former Charlotte back Terron Kellman impressed during the spring. So did redshirt freshman Nico Hamilton.

True freshman Jaden Lawrence is on the roster, as well as Dontae Burch.

"I mean, that's still a battle," Sawvel said, referring to naming a starter in the backfield.

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
