LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowboys wrap up their brief homestand on Saturday hosting Cal poly in the Arena -Auditorium in the first ever meeting between the two programs.

The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start, as Wyoming looks to move to 2-0 on the season.

About The Teams

Wyoming opened the season with 104-56 win over Northern New Mexico in the Arena-Auditorium on Tuesday night. It was the most points in a season opener since 1987, as Wyoming shot 62 percent from the field for the highest percentage in a game since 2013. The Pokes also shot 56.5 percent from behind the arc for the best since the 2018 campaign. The Pokes dished out 22 assists on the night for the second most in the Jeff Linder era of Cowboy basketball. The Pokes also held a +10 margin on the glass and forced 20 turnovers and held the Eagles of NNMC to only 33 percent from the field.

The Mustangs head to Laramie with a 1-1 overall record after falling to Denver on the road on Thursday by a score of 97-76. Cal Poly earned a win over LaVerne in the season opener by a score of 80-62. Cal Poly heads into the game averaging 78 points per game and are allowing 79.5 per contest. The Mustangs are shooting 44.6 percent from the field and allowing the opposition to shoot 47.2 percent from the field. Cal Poly is averaging 36.5 rebounds per game on the season and are -3.0 on the glass this season.

 

About The Players

Guard Sam Griffin added 23 points in his Cowboy debut. He went over 1,500 points in his collegiate career as well. Fellow transfer Akuel Kot, as he poured in 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting and perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. He scored 20 or more points 20 times last season at Fort Lewis College.

Forward Cam Manyawu recorded a double-double in his first career game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first double-double in a season opener since Justin James did so against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 6, 2018. It was the first double-double by a player in their first game at Wyoming since LaDarion Jones did so against Denver in 1998. He was also second on the team with five assists in the contest.

Forward Oleg Kojenets added 11 points and six rebounds, career-highs for the Nebraska transfer. Junior college transfer Kobe Newton added 10 points and was 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Brendan Wenzel added nine points and three rebounds.

Cal Poly is led in scoring by guard Kobe Sanders at 17.0 per game. He also adds 4.0 rebounds per game and is shooting 91 percent from the free throw line. Forward Joel Armotrading adds 13.0 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game to lead the team. He is shooting 62.5 percent from the field for the season.

 

About The Series

The contest will be the first meeting between the two schools. It marks the first contest against a team from the Big West since Wyoming faced off against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 29, 2021.
