LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowboys officially wrapped up fall camp earlier this week and have their sights set on next Thursday night and an opening-night matchup with the Akron Zips.

This will be the Cowboys first trip to Ohio since playing at Bowling Green in 2011.

Head coach Jay Sawvel met with the media on Friday in his first game week press conference of the season:

"It is time. I'm excited to go out and see this group play and compete," the second-year head coach said. "We expect that we are going to have to go on the road and play well. That is the expectation we have, internally. It is a big deal for us to get started."

Wide receiver Jaylen Sargent had a breakout season in 2024. He was one of the top deep threats in the Mountain West, ranking second during conference play in yards per reception at 23.3. The senior was 10th in receiving yards per game in league play at 60.

In final three games, Sargent had 317 receiving yards and recorded six catches of 30 or more yards with two touchdowns.

The Cowboy defense finished last season as the nation's top unit on third down, holding opponents to 25.9 percent. The unit also held Boise State and Washington State to 31 combined points over the final two games, including limiting John Mateer and the Cougars to under 300 yards of total offense.

Wyoming will be making the 1,329-mile trip to Akron on Wednesday in preparation for Thursday evening's game.

The Pokes last contest in Ohio saw Wyoming earn a 28-27 win over Bowling Green. Gabe Knapton and Josh Biezuns blocked the potential game-tying PAT with less than 3 seconds remaining to give Wyoming the win.

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
