Wyoming Takes to the Track on Final Day of MW Championships

CLOVIS, Calif., — The third and final day of action of the 2024 Mountain West Outdoor Championships wrapped up with a day full of finals.

A final day that saw Salma Elbadra take home an individual title and two podium spots along with a personal best from Jaheim Ferguson and a third place finish in the 400M Hurdles.

Salma Elbadra became the first and only Cowgirl to bring home a 2024 Mountain West individual title to Laramie as she bested the field in the 1500. Elbadra went 4:17.18 to take care of business in her first of two races on the day. The freshman from Morocco earned another podium finish just a short but after her 1500 title as she went 2:06.40 to take third in the 800. Madelyn Blazo joined Elbadra in the finals of the 1500. Blazo ran a 4:23.17 to take fifth place and earn four points for the Cowgirls.

Jaheim Ferguson found the podium in the 400M Hurdles. Ferguson ran a personal best 51.32 to take third place and post six points for the Brown & Gold and move up to No. 6 all-time on the Wyoming top-10 list in the process. Gabby Drube and Taylor Weidinger were up first on the track in the 400M Hurdles as the women went first. Drube and Weidinger went fourth and sixth posting times of 59.09 and 1:00.47 for the Cowgirls.

Jaymison Cox earned his spot in the 400M Dash finals with an impressive performance on Thursday night. Cox followed it up in the finals by clocking a time of 47.25 for fifth place.

Trevor Stephen and Mac Zastrow earned their spots in the men's 1500 race as two of the twelve competitors to compete in the race on Saturday. Stephen and Zastrow went ninth and tenth with times of 3:48.88 and 3:49.27.

The Cowgirls were up first in the running of the 5000M. Eowyn Dalbec turned in the best performance of the night for the Wyoming women with a ninth place finish and a time of 16:40.55. Dalbec was followed by Hailey Uhre (11th), Kylie Simshauser (17th), Abigail Whitman (21st), Leah Christians (26th) and Madelyn Blazo (29th).

Mason Norman led the way for the Cowboys running a 14:11.53 and posting a ninth place finish. Norman was followed by Jacob White (11th), Gus McIntyre (13th), Asefa Wetzel (15th), Albert Steiner (16th), Ryker Holtzen (17th) and Josh Rodgers (20th).

The Cowgirls went 46.58 for a seventh place finish in the 4x100 relay.

The Cowboys went 41.15 in the 4x100 relay to take fourth place.

In the last event of the night the Cowgirls took ninth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:43.58.

The Cowboys took eighth in the 4x400 with a time of 3:17.47.

Elayna Chafee finished in 15th place in the Triple Jump with a mark of 37-10.

The final tally after three days in California at the Championships. The Cowboys finished in sixth place with 51 points and the Cowgirls wrapped the three-day meet in ninth with 35 points.

Up next for the Cowboys and Cowgirls will be the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. For those who qualify, the meet will be held in Fayetville, Ark., on May 22nd through May 25th.
