COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., -- The University of Wyoming divers enjoyed a fruitful time during Day 2 of the Air Force Diving Invite on Friday at Cadet Natatorium. The three Cowgirl divers – junior Melissa Mirafuentes, senior McKenna Houlihan and freshman Gabriella Hagler – claimed first place in a team diving event.
“The team event is so much fun, and it’s especially fun when you dive great and win,” diving head coach Ted Everett said. “I love how the divers aren’t just competing for themselves but for one another, as well. The girls were fantastic.”
Each of the three divers complete two dives and a dive from each category. Two dives must be done from each the 1- and 3-meter boards and platform.
UW’s trio complied a score of 315 points to finish first. That was 11 points clear of second-place Utah.
That win stole the headline, but Mirafuentes strong day wasn’t done. She took third in 1-meter in a field comprised of SEC and PAC-12 foes.
Sophomore Juan Gonzalez spearheaded the competition for the Cowboys. He placed first in the consolation finals in the 3-meter event.
“The team really settled in and did a great job,” Everett said. “In a meet of this caliber, with top-flight teams from the SEC and PAC-12, I’m so impressed with how we remained calm in the moment.”
The Air Force Diving Invite wraps up Saturday.
