Cowboys in the NFL: Free Agent Frenzy
LARAMIE -- For just the second time since 2017, no Wyoming Cowboys were selected in the NFL Draft.
That doesn't mean guys aren't getting an opportunity.
Former offensive lineman Eric Abojei Monday was extended an invite to Miami's upcoming rookie minicamp in mid-May.
The 6-foot-5, 330-pound guard-turned-tackle appeared in 46 games during his six-year career at UW, including all 13 during the 2022 season. Abojei helped clear a path for a pair of All-Mountain West running backs, Nico Evans and Xazavian Valladay. Last season, Titus Swen cracked the 1,000-yard mark on the ground, too.
Abojei, who spent the offseason training in Laramie, was a three-star recruit out of Robinsdale Cooper High School in New Hope, Minn. He was dubbed the No. 2 recruit in the state and was heavily recruited by the in-state Gophers.
Here are the other former Cowboys who got the call:
Xazavian Valladay - Running back - Houston Texans
The second-leading rusher in program history was a hot commodity Saturday night. Xazavian Valladay, who spent five years at Wyoming before transferring to Arizona State, inked with the Houston Texans. He reportedly received a $30,000 signing bonus and a three-year deal worth $2.725 million.
Valladay rushed for 3,274 yards in a Pokes' uniform from 2018-21. Only Brian Hill -- 4,287 -- finished his career with more yards on the ground. Valladay, a 6-foot, 200-pound Chicago native, found the end zone 19 times during his stint on the high plains.
He added an eye-popping 16 more touchdowns during his final collegiate season in Tempe. He also rushed for 1,192 yards at ASU. Both stats led the PAC-12 Conference.
Titus Swen - Running back - Indianapolis Colts
While Titus Swen's tenure in Laramie didn't end well, his stats were undeniable.
In just three seasons -- one as a starter -- the Fort Worth, Texas product rolled up 2,161 rushing yards, falling just outside the school's Top-10 list. Swen, who was dismissed from the program after the 2022 season finale for violating team rules, signed with the Indianapolis Colts Saturday night. He reportedly landed a $3,000 signing bonus.
The 5-foot-11, 206-pound running back amassed a career-high 1,039 rushing yards last season and scored eight touchdowns. He also snagged 14 catches out of the backfield for 108 yards. Swen was invited to the annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, where he rushed for a team-best 73 yards on just eight carries.
CJ Coldon - Cornerback - Minnesota Vikings
CJ Coldon picked off two passes, batted down 16 more and tallied 115 tackles as a three-year starter at Wyoming. He transferred to Oklahoma for his final season. There he added 40 more tackles and a team-high four interceptions.
Now, he's a Minnesota Viking.
The Belleville, Ill., product signed as an undrafted free agent on Saturday evening. Coldon, who suffered a pair of season-ending injuries during his time in Laramie, but is probably best remembered for his 30-yard scoop-and-score in a 37-31 upset over Missouri in the 2019 season opener.
Azizi Hearn - Cornerback - Las Vegas Raiders
A three-year starter at Wyoming after transferring from Arizona, Azizi Hearn could soon join his former teammate, Tyler Hall, in the Raiders secondary. Marcus Epps is also a safety in Sin City, but never played with Hearn in Laramie.
Hearn, who spent his final collegiate season at UCLA, inked a free-agent deal with Las Vegas Saturday, which reportedly includes a guaranteed $18,000 signing bonus.
The Oceanside, Calif., native never picked off a pass during his college days, but in Laramie did was a major factor in the running game, tallying 79 tackles. He also broke up 13 passes. Hearn, who is 6-foot-2, 206 pounds, racked up 40 more tackles and broke up 17 passes during his lone season in Westwood.
