Marcus Williams makes it official — he’s in the portal
LARAMIE -- Less than 24 hours after news broke that Wyoming's leading scorer Marcus Williams was entering the NCAA Transfer Portal, he made it official himself with a post on Twitter:
The unanimous selection for Mountain West Freshman of the Year, is the second Cowboy to leave the program in three weeks, joining Kwane Marble II, who is now on the roster at Loyola Marymount where former UW head coach Allen Edwards is now an assistant.
Williams, a Dickinson, Texas product, took the league by storm in 2020-21, scoring in double figures in his first 15 collegiate basketball games. By season's end, Williams was averaging nearly 15 points per game from the point guard spot under first-year head coach Jeff Linder.
"Coach Linder is truly a mastermind and the future of the Wyoming Cowboys is without a doubt very bright," he wrote in his post.
Williams was a verbal commit to joining Linder's program at Northern Colorado before he accepted the job at UW in March of 2020.
“We thank Marcus for his contributions to our program and we wish him well in the future,” Linder said Tuesday in a press release issued by the school.
Currently, there are well over a thousand players in the transfer portal, partly thanks to an NCAA ruling that an athlete can transfer one-time without having to sit out a full season. According to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, that ruling will be officially approved Thursday. Williams will also have four years of eligibility wherever he lands. The NCAA is allowing an additional season of eligibility due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
If mutually agreed upon, transfers can return to their original schools.
