LARAMIE -- The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team takes to the road for the first time this season. The Cowboys and Cowgirls travel to Air Force on Saturday for a 1 p.m. meet inside Cadet Natatorium.

It’s the second meet of the season for the Cowgirls. They booked a victory in their first competition of the 2023-24, downing rival Colorado State, 171-129, a couple weeks ago in Laramie.

Another rival in the Falcons present themselves Saturday. And head coach Dave Denniston hopes his team showcases a similar edge against yet another Front Range foe.

“When our women are energized and excited, they tend to perform at another level that’s fun to watch and fun to be around,” Denniston said. “We’ll have to keep that energy going after a drive down there. Thankfully, we have people on the team that get the girls pretty hyped up, so I don’t think that will be a problem. If we go in there with good energy, we should have a positive result."

Many Cowgirls logged a positive result within that team win against the Rams. Carly Palmer took first a trio of times, while Brynlee Busskohl, Maisyn Klimczak and Tara Joyce each won a pair of races.

Saturday marks the first meet of the regular season for the Cowboys. Similar to the Cowgirls a couple weeks ago, Wyoming’s men’s team will take aim at a rival during in its first meet of the season.

“It’s baptism by fire,” Denniston said. “Air Force is one of our biggest rivals, and I know our guys are itching to race a little bit. When we go down there, it’s always a tough meet at their place. I think we have guys ready to show what they can do, and I think a lot of these freshmen guys are ready to stand out and show us some great stuff.”

The Cowboys took care of Air Force last season, 194-105, in Laramie. The Cowgirls, on the other hand, will look to avenge their defeat from 2022-23 when the Falcons won, 161-139.

Following the meet at Air Force, Wyoming returns home for a good bit of time. Both the men and women host Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Mesa on Oct. 28 and Nov. 3, respectively. In addition to that, the Cowgirls host Northern Colorado on Nov. 4.
