Wyoming Freestylers Lead the Way on Day 2 of WAC Championships

PHARR, Texas (2/23/23) – The University of Wyoming men’s swimming and diving team completed Day 2 of the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday. The Cowboys were led by their mid-distance freestylers inside the City of Pharr Natatorium.
Wyoming occupied nearly half of the top-10 in the 500-yard freestyle. Caleb Ozenne led that group, placing fifth with a time of 4:23.74. Charlie Clark took sixth, clocking in at 4:24.00, Gavin Smith wasn’t far behind at seventh in a time of 4:26.20, and Harry Tjaden touched 10th with a time of 4:27.92.
“The highlight of the day was our 500 freestylers where freshman Caleb Ozenne went the best time for the Cowboys,” head coach Dave Denniston said.
Wyoming remains in fifth with 168 points. UNLV leads the way having scored 346 points, while Cal Baptist and Grand Canyon round out the top-three with 247 and 211 points, respectively.
The 200-yard freestyle relay began the evening with a fourth-place finish. The team of Grant Sloan, Quinn Teller, Kody Hollingworth and Andrew Rodriguez clocked in at 1:20.05.
Sloan also took 10th in the 50-yard freestyle. He registered a time of 20.02.
Payton Lee competed in the 3-meter event. He took 11th after compiling a score of 247.40.
The meet continues Friday with preliminary heats of the 400-yard individual medley at 9:30 a.m.
