Wyoming swimming announces the signing of 10 student-athletes

LARAMIE -- University of Wyoming swimming and diving head coach Dave Denniston announced his 2023 fall signing class Wednesday. A total of 10 individuals committed to be future Cowboys and Cowgirls.

Below is a list of commitments …

Sophie Nutter (Austin, Texas)

Nutter is a butterflyer from the Lone Star State. She competed for Longhorn Aquatics.

“Sophie stood out in the recruiting process because she is very goal driven and constantly strives to improve in all of her events, but gladly takes on butterfly as her specialty,” Denniston said. “She loved swing dancing with the team more than about any recruit we have had on campus!”

Andrew Ravegum (Arvada, Colorado)

Ravegum is a breaststroker and IMer from the Denver area. He competed for Jeffco Hurricanes and is now swimming with the Foothills Swim Team.

“Drew is a diverse racer that really adds to the core of our men’s program,” Denniston said. “He is willing to race about any event and has a champion’s mindset that he brings to everything he does. Drew is the type of athlete every team wishes they had.”

Carson Muir (Vestavia, Alabama)

Muir is a butterflyer from the Birmingham area. She competed for the Birmingham Swim League.

“Carson is a Wyoming girl at heart that has been stuck in Alabama,” Denniston said. “She loves everything Laramie has to offer, and we can’t wait to see her thrive as a cowgirl!”

Adam Pannell (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

Pannell is a distance freestyler and butterflyer from southern Colorado. He competed for Falfins Swimming.

“Adam swims under my former coach, Jorge Fernandez, in Colorado Springs,” Denniston said. “I know he is tough and knows how to train. I believe his fastest days are ahead of him. He will help continue our great tradition of butterflyers and distance swimmers that we have at Wyoming.”

Tara Joyce (Cody, Wyoming)

Joyce is a freestyler from northwest Wyoming. She competed for the Cody Kountry Aquatic Team.

“We can't wait to have Tara join our program,” Denniston said. “In the simplest way I can put this, ‘She adds speed.’ She's a diverse swimmer who can compete in nearly any event, but we are excited to see what she can do in the freestyle events and for our relays. We believe she will be a game-changer for Wyoming.”

Ellie Lang (Cherry Hill, New Jersey)

Lang is a sprint freestyler from the Philadelphia area. She competed for South Jersey Aquatic Club.

“We love having siblings on our team,” Denniston said. “The younger sister to Matt Lang, she has all of the tools to be a stand-out sprinter for the Cowgirls. She works hard in the weight room, and with some fine-tuning, the sky is the limit for Ellie.”

Kane Kriz (Saint Charles, Illinois)

Kriz is a breaststroker from just west of Chicago. He competed for St. Charles Swim Team.

“One of our main goals with this class was to add a strong competitive breaststroker,” Denniston said. “We believe we found him in Saint Charles, Illinois. Kane has dominated the age group scene in Illinois and he will have an immediate impact on our program in the breaststroke events.”

Skye Rehard (Gillette, Wyoming)

Rehard is a breaststroker and IMer from northeast Wyoming. She competed for Gillette Swim Team.

“Skye is a legacy swimmer with strong roots in Wyoming,” Denniston said. “Her father and uncle both competed for Wyoming in the 90s, but we are excited for her to establish her own path at UW. She will be a great addition to our talented breaststroke group.”

Bruno Grau (Barcelona, Spain)

Grau is a diver from Spain. He will add depth to the men’s diving squad.

“From the time we have signed him, it’s apparent that Bruno is getting better every day,” Denniston said. “He will be a top scorer for the Cowboys, and we believe will compete on the national stage.”

Derek Long (Parkville, Missouri)

Long is a distance swimmer from the Kansas City area. He competed for Tsunami Swim Team of KC.

“Derek is really going to add to our distance group, but I also believe we can find some speed for the shorter events, as well,” Denniston said. “We have had some great swimmers in our program come out of Missouri, and we believe Derek will be another successful addition.”

From Bison to Triceratops - All of Wyoming's Official Things

Every state in our nation has chosen things that represent the state in one way or another to be official state things. Like a flower, or animal. Wyoming is no different.

The Equality State, or the Cowboy State, depending on which state slogan you want to go with, has a state flower. But did you know we also have a state tree and a state fish? Yes, we even have a state code.

To be an official thing, a member of the state legislature must write and submit a bill to the legislature declaring that a thing will be the official state thing. Then the legislature votes to pass the bill, or not, if it passes, the governor signs the bill into law and we have a new official state thing.
