LARAMIE -- It looked bad. The news is worse.

Wyoming wide receiver Alex Brown will miss the remainder of the season with a broken left fibula after being rolled up on during the Cowboys' first offensive drive Saturday night against visiting Utah State.

His career in Laramie is over.

"He'll have surgery this week," head coach Jay Sawvel said Monday during his weekly press conference. "Fortunately for him, that's one, you know, it's like a six-week recovery. It's the lesser of the evils, that way."

The sixth-year senior caps his career with 229 yards on just 19 catches. The 6-foot-4, 202-pound Spring, Texas product, snagged just two of those for 21 yards this fall.

Brown did haul in one touchdown pass during his tenure on the high plains. That came back in 2022. It was an important one, too.

He leapt to haul in a 32-yard strike from quarterback Jayden Clemons before coasting across the goal line early in the fourth quarter of a 14-13 victory over Border War rival Colorado State inside Canvas Stadium.

"It was kind of like a fever dream, to be honest," Brown said back in August of 2023, recalling his touchdown, which will go down forever in series lore. "I just turned 21 a couple hours later and it was the first game my parents came to all year. It was the first game my sister had seen since, like, 2020, or something like that. So, it was kind of crazy.

"Honestly, it was kind of a weird feeling after the game because I didn't want it to be all about me. It was very much a fever dream for me."

Brown was a three-star recruit out of Klein Collins High in the Greater Houston Area. He earned Academic All-District 15-6A his senior season. Mountain West foe Air Force wanted him. So did Southern Miss and Tulane. Ivy schools like Columbia and Yale came calling, too.

"Laramie, Wyoming has been a place I have been grateful to call home for the last five years," Brown penned on social media last offseason before announcing he would return for a sixth season. "I am eternally grateful for the relationships and experiences that I have come across in my time here. The city has been nothing but welcoming to me and made my time here well worth it. I came here as a 17-year-old kid with no idea of what to do.

"I've grown up here and have made memories that will last me countless lifetimes."

University of Wyoming’s Top 50 Football Players

During the summer of 2021, 7220Sports.com counted down the Top 50 football players in University of Wyoming history, presented by Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Worthy of Wyoming.

The rules are simple: What was the player's impact while in Laramie? That means NFL stats, draft status or any other accolade earned outside of UW is irrelevant when it comes to this list.

This isn't a one-man job. This task called for a panel of experts. Joining 7220's Cody Tucker are Robert GagliardiJared NewlandRyan Thorburn, and Kevin McKinney.

We all compiled our own list of 50 and let computer averages do the work. Think BCS -- only we hope this catalog is fairer.
