Portal Tracker: Let’s Check in on Former Wyoming Football Players

LARAMIE -- Craig Bohl said Monday that his staff has "more hits than misses" when it comes to snagging talent out of the NCAA Transfer Portal.

His leading passer, rusher and receiving touchdown leader -- Andrew Peasley, Harrison Waylee and Ayir Asante, respectively -- all came from other schools. Jakorey Hawkins and Tyrecus Davis started their college careers elsewhere, too. Both had an interception in the Cowboys' 42-9 rout of visiting Hawaii last Saturday.

What about the players who left in 2023?

Last offseason, a number of Wyoming football players thrust themselves into college football's version of free agency. Sixteen to be exact, according to 247sports. That included the team's leading receiver, Joshua Cobbs, its leading rusher, Titus Swen (He eventually declared for the NFL Draft), and arguably its top cornerback, Cam Stone.

Up and coming edge rusher Oluwaseyi Omotosho booked it for Oregon State. Emmanuel Pregnon landed at USC just hours after Wyoming's spring game.

With one week remaining in the regular season, let's take a look at how those former Cowboys are doing at their new schools:

Emmanuel Pregnon - Offensive Line - USC 

This former Freshman All-American fielded numerous Power-5 offers after he announced via social media he was entering the transfer portal. The timing was not ideal -- hours after the Cowboys' spring game. The wording on his announcement -- "Time to level up" -- didn't sit well with the locals, either. Within minutes of his post, Arizona, Purdue, Minnesota and Oregon, among many, many others, came calling. The 6-foot-5, 315-pound guard chose USC. Pregnon, a Denver product, has appeared in all 12 games for the Trojans this fall. USC averages just 139 yards per game on the ground and Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams has been sacked 33 times. That ranks the Trojans No. 106 out of 130 FBS teams.

Cam Stone - Cornerback - Hawaii 

Cam Stone's homecoming didn't go as planned. The senior corner registered just three tackles in his return to Laramie last Saturday. To make matters worse for the Texan and his buddies in the secondary, Andrew Peasley had a career day, throwing for 319 yards and three touchdowns. During his first injury riddled season on the islands, Stone has 20 tackles, five pass breakups and an interception.

Oluwaseyi Omotosho - Defensive End - Oregon State 

This former Wyoming edge rusher has appeared in just three games this fall. According to Oregonlive.com, that has had nothing to do with injuries. Oluwaseyi Omotosho has tallied just four tackles, along with a strip sack. That came in a 62-17 rout of Stanford.

Joshua Cobbs - Wide Receiver - Houston 

Wyoming's leading receiver in 2022 has appeared in 10 games for the Houston Cougars this season. During that time, the 6-foot-4, 204-pound San Antonio native has seven catches for 59 yards in Dana Holgorsen's wide-open passing attack. Cobbs' best outing was a two-catch performance in a win over Sam Houston State. He rolled up 25 receiving yards.

Titus Swen - Running Back - NFL Draft 

The Cowboys' rushing leader signed a free-agent deal with the Indianapolis Colts after being dismissed from the UW football program and briefly entering the transfer portal. It was short-lived. In late October Swen signed his letter of intent to join the XFL.

Jagger Filippone - Offensive Line - San Diego

Jagger Filippone was a 6-foot-6, 265-pound offensive line prospect during his one season in Laramie. He redshirted during the 2022 season. Now, the Torrey Pines, Calif., product is a tight end at the University of San Diego. He has just one tackle on special teams through six games.

Tyrese Grant - Wide Receiver - N/A

This former three-star wide receiver came to Laramie in 2020. He appeared in four games during his redshirt freshman season, seeing one rushing attempt against Colorado State in 2021. That went for no gain. Grant played in two games the following fall against Illinois and Hawaii. He didn't record a stat.

Joey Braasch - Running Back - N/A 

This guy would've likely been Wyoming's starting running back in last December's Arizona Bowl. Now, we'll never know. Joey Braasch entered the transfer portal before that postseason matchup with Ohio in Tucson. The Nebraska native carried the ball 29 times for 91 yards in 2022. He also caught four passes for 25 yards. Braasch never scored a touchdown, but did lose a fumble in a season-opening loss at Illinois.

Hank Gibbs - Quarterback - Northern Colorado

Hank Gibbs landed in Greeley this offseason with a real chance to play quarterback for the Northern Colorado Bears. He has appeared in six games this fall, completing 4-of-12 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. The Fayetteville, Ark., native and former Wyoming legacy player has also rushed for 22 yards on five attempts. That included a rushing touchdown against Washington State.

Gavin Beerup - Wide Receiver - Nebraska-Kearney

Gavin Beerup had a wild stint in Laramie. He came to UW as a three-star quarterback and left as a reserve wide receiver. A shoulder injury led him to the outside. The California native was forced into duty under center during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. He threw for 37 yards and added 27 more on the ground in consecutive losses to New Mexico and Boise State. During his first season at Nebraska-Kearney, Beerup has two receptions for 13 yards.

Zaire Jackson - Cornerback - N/A

Remember this spring game hero? Zaire Jackson, a defensive back, left high school early to enroll at Wyoming. While his classmates were attending prom, he was taking part in spring drills, the only freshman to do that in 2021. He picked up a mishandled snap on a punt near the goal line and twisted into the end zone. He also picked off a pass. That never translated to the regular season. The Denver product never saw the field in his two seasons in Laramie.

Akili Bonner - Defensive End - N/A 

Bonner appeared in two career games, both during the 2022 season. The Carmichael, Calif., product failed to record any stats against Northern Colorado and Ohio. He is now reportedly doing an internship with a Cheyenne television station.

Mykel Janise - Offensive Lineman - Louisiana Tech 

This 6-foot-4, 265-pound offensive lineman never saw the field during his two seasons in Laramie. A former three-star prospect from Beaumont, Texas, Mykel Janise didn't allow a single single sack during his senior season and capped his prep career with 49 pancake blocks. Janise entered the transfer portal in the offseason and landed at Louisiana Tech. He is no longer listed on the Bulldogs' roster.

Jordon Vaughn - Running Back - Abilene Christian

This 6-foot-2, 220-pound tailback appeared in just one game during his two seasons at Wyoming. That was last winter's Arizona Bowl where Jordon Vaughn led the team in rushing with 67 yards on 16 attempts. He also scored two touchdowns, including one from 17 yards out. He hit the portal in the offseason and eventually landed at Abilene Christian. Starting his stint as a linebacker, Vaughn was moved to the backfield where he has rushed for 253 yards on 46 carries. He has added three touchdowns. The sophomore also has five catches for 38 yards.

Deshawn Woods - Offensive Line - N/A 

This guy was just the second four-star recruit in Wyoming history. After originally committing to Missouri, Deshawn Woods landed in Laramie. It appeared to be a huge pickup for this staff. Woods, who had offers from Tennessee, Penn State, Nebraska, Florida and many, many others, was ranked the No. 12 interior offensive lineman in the country, per 247sports. He was also the second-ranked recruit in the state of Nebraska. It never panned out. Woods didn't see the field in his two seasons at UW and eventually entered the transfer portal.

Keonte Glinton - Defensive Back - New Mexico State 

A former nickelback in Laramie, Keonte Glinton left the program and eventually surfaced at New Mexico State where he is lined up at the corner spot. Through 11 games this fall, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound California native has 16 tackles, six pass breakups and a quarterback hurry.

Correction: In the original story, it was said Cam Stone was beat on a 40-yard touchdown from Andrew Peasley to Wyatt Wieland. The former UW corner was actually covering Alex Brown on the play but was forced to peel off and make the tackle in the end zone. We regret this error.
