Wyoming Basketball to Play in Myrtle Beach Invitational
LARAMIE -- Grab your sunscreen.
Wyoming will be one of eight teams to play in the 2023 Myrtle Beach Invitational next November, joining Wichita State, Coastal Carolina, Charleston, Saint Louis, Furman, Liberty and Vermont, according to Jon Rothstein.
Dates and matchups will be announced at a later date.
The Cowboys, who finished last season 9-22 overall, appeared in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam last fall, knocking off Howard 78-71 before dropping the final two contests against Drake and Boston College.
In South Carolina, three of the teams in attendance are coming off a trip to the NCAA Tournament: Vermont, Furman and Charleston.
You might recall No. 13 Furman's last-second 68-67 victory over four-seed Virginia. The College of Charleston, which is coached by former Cowboy Pat Kelsey, fell to San Diego State in the opening round. The Aztecs also took care of Furman to move on to the Sweet 16. Vermont lost to Marquette.
How has Wyoming done against the teams in this field?
Wichita State: 3-10
Coastal Carolina: 2-1
Saint Louis: 1-1
Wyoming topped Coastal Carolina in a best-of-three series in 2017 to claim a CBI Championship. The Cowboys won both games at home and dropped the lone meeting in Conway, S.C.
Boise State won its first two games of the Myrtle Beach Invitational last season. Leon Rice's Broncos beat Colorado 68-55 in the opening round before hammering Loyola-Chicago 70-48 the following day. Boise State fell to Charlotte in Round 3. UMass eventually claimed the tournament title.
Fellow Mountain West foe Utah State won the championship in 2021
The Myrtle Beach Invitational is an ESPN Event and has been played annually (aside from the 2020 pandemic-shortened season) since 2018.
