Wyoming Running Back Enters Portal After NCAA JUCO Ruling
LARAMIE -- Jamari Ferrell is entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Wyoming's running back confirmed Saturday he plans to utilize a ruling by the NCAA Division-I Board of Directors that allows senior student-athletes an additional year of competition if they came from the junior college level.
Ferrell began his collegiate career at Saddleback C.C. in California.
The 5-foot-8, 200-pound Mission Viejo native rushed for 318 yards on just 80 carries last fall. He also found the end zone once. That came in a 49-45 shootout road victory over New Mexico. In easily his best-career outing, Ferrell gashed the Lobos for 89 yards on 20 attempts. He finished with a long of 23 in the win.
Ferrell amassed 506 rushing yards and two scores during his tenure on the high plains. He added 51 receiving yards.

Fellow JUCO product Tyrecus Davis also entered the portal on Friday after spending two seasons in Laramie. The senior began his career at Navarro C.C. in his native Texas. Wide receiver and returner Caleb Cooley is also eligible to play one more season after starting his playing career at Butte C.C.
Ferrell will join former Wyoming tailback Dawaiian McNeely, along with 13 others in college football's version of free agency. Wide receivers Tyler "TK" King (New Mexico State), Justin Stevenson and Kaden LaFramboise are also gone.
The defense has taken the biggest hit, losing nine to the portal: tackle Jaden Williams (Kentucky), edge rushers Braden Siders and Ethan Day, safeties Koa McIntyre, Miles Tucker, Nikos Varelas, linebacker Read Sunn (Eastern Washington) and cornerbacks Naz Hill and Davis. Senior linebacker Cole DeMarzo also announced in early December he would be retiring from football with one year of eligibility remaining.
Leading rusher Harrison Waylee is expected to rejoin the Cowboys' backfield next fall. So is Sam Scott, Nico Hamilton, Mitchell Anderson, Dontae Burch, along with incoming freshmen Samuel "Tote" Harris (Cibolo, Texas) and Jaden Lawrence (Parker, Colo.).
High School running back Grayson Rigdon (Columbus, Texas) is listed as an "athlete" on the official roster.
At least one more transfer running back is set to visit campus in the coming weeks, according to a source familiar with the situation.
The transfer portal will close at midnight. A brief window will open again this spring from April 16-30. Wyoming's spring practices will begin March 25.
